When drafting an email, text message, or document on your phone, finding the right words can sometimes be a challenge. While you could switch apps to get assistance from AI-powered tools like Microsoft Copilot or ChatGPT, there’s an easier way—using an AI-enhanced keyboard. Third-party keyboards such as Wordtune, Microsoft SwiftKey, and Grammarly incorporate artificial intelligence to help you compose, edit, and refine text directly from your keyboard. Here’s how they work.

Wordtune: AI-Powered Writing and Editing

Wordtune allows you to create or improve text based on specific instructions. Available as a web tool, a Microsoft Word Add-in, and a mobile app, it’s especially useful on iOS devices for quick access.

Getting Started with Wordtune

  1. Install the App: Download Wordtune from the App Store and sign in or create an account.
  2. Customize Your Experience: Answer a few questions about how you plan to use Wordtune.
  3. Choose a Plan: You can use the free version for basic rewriting or subscribe to Wordtune Premium ($24.99/month or $119.99/year) for unlimited rewrites and corrections.

Enabling Wordtune as a Keyboard

  1. Go to Settings: Navigate to Settings > Apps > Wordtune on your iPhone.
  2. Enable Keyboards: Toggle on Wordtune and Allow Full Access to use it in other apps.
  3. Switch Keyboards: When typing, press the globe icon on your keyboard and select Wordtune.

Using Wordtune to Generate or Rewrite Text

  • Create New Content: Tap the Wordtune icon on the keyboard, then select Create. Enter a description of what you need, and Wordtune will generate a draft.
  • Refine Existing Text: Highlight text, tap the Wordtune icon, and choose Rewrite to get multiple suggestions. Use arrows to browse options and select the best fit.
  • Adjust Tone & Style: While in Rewrite mode, tap the General icon to switch between Casual, Formal, Shorten, or Expand styles.
  • Reply to Emails or Messages: Open an email, tap Reply, then use Wordtune’s AI to generate a response based on the original message.

Microsoft SwiftKey: AI Assistance for Writing and Editing

Microsoft SwiftKey, available on iOS and Android, is a free AI-powered keyboard with advanced text prediction and rewriting capabilities. While Copilot has replaced some of its original AI functions, SwiftKey still offers in-keyboard rewriting tools.

Setting Up SwiftKey

  1. Download & Install: Get Microsoft SwiftKey from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Sign In with Microsoft: This unlocks additional features, though you can still use the keyboard without signing in.
  3. Enable the Keyboard:
    • On iOS: Go to Settings > Keyboards, then enable SwiftKey and Full Access.
    • On Android: Open SwiftKey > Enable SwiftKey, then set it as your default keyboard.

Using SwiftKey’s AI Features

  • Compose with Copilot: Tap the Copilot icon on the keyboard toolbar to generate text. On iOS, this redirects you to the Copilot app, where you can create content and copy it back to your email or message.
  • Rewrite Text with Tone Adjustments: Tap Tone in the SwiftKey toolbar, enter text, and swipe through different styles like Professional, Casual, Polite, Witty, or Social Post before selecting the one that best fits your needs.

Enhance Your Writing with AI Keyboards

AI-powered keyboards can significantly improve your writing efficiency by offering real-time text generation, rewriting, and tone adjustments without switching between apps. Whether you need quick edits or full AI-powered composition, tools like Wordtune and Microsoft SwiftKey provide seamless integration for a smoother writing experience on mobile devices.
